Welcome!

Welcome to the Biology 7th Hour Blog! As always I am excited about anything that is related to science and this page is designed for you guys to create and open up lines of communication. I will try to make posts concerning different topics and you guys will have the opportunity to respond to my posts and each others.

First off, a couple of rules to start off...

1. All information written must relate to Biology class and must be appropriate.
2. When you create a user name, it must represent your last name so that I know who you are and can give you credit for anything that you post.
3. Be respectful of each other.
4. For assignments, all posts must be made prior to class starting.

Use the toolbar to the side to help you find specific posts relating to specific labs or practice problems or units.

This is to help you so please give me feedback on anything that could be useful or helpful to you!

Enjoy!

Evidence for Evolution

First assignment!

For your assignment every group needs to create a comment and describe their piece of evidence. This way when we get into our jig saw groups, you guys can pull up the website and refer to it as you explain the information. You will also be able to reference this late, like at test time. As you go back to look over the information tonight and do not understand something feel free to make a new comment and ask a question. I will do my best to answer your question so that all can benefit from your thinking!

Format for the Comment Post:

1. Piece of Evidence:

2. Definition:

3. Examples: (PS if there is a link that really had a good picture copy and paste the link in here!)

4. How it relates:

  1. Example:

    1. Piece of Evidence: Human Evolution

    2. Definition: Over time humans have gone through many different stages. By tracing back the different stages we can see that humans have a common ancestor with chimpanzees.

    3. Examples: We have 96% of our DNA in common with the chimp

    4. How it relates: If we have evidence of different types of humans, we can see that as a species they have changed over time. If humans have evolved it is interesting to think that other species may have evolved as well.

  3. 1. Piece of Evidence:
    Fossil Records
    2. Definition:
Evidence of life/evolution stored in a rock or fossil.
    3. Examples: (PS if there is a link that really had a good picture copy and paste the link in here!)

    4. How it relates:
It shows the changes of a species, over time,in sequences of sedementary rock layers.

I love the post, but I am not sure what is going on with the picture. Make sure that you write a sentence explaining your picture so that it is more helpful!

Otherwise...Great Job and a good model for others to follow!

  5. Our peice of evidence is:Anitbiotic Resistance.

Definition:A heritable in micro organisms that enables them to survive in the presence of an antibiotic.

Example: One example is MRSA or otherwise known as the "super bug". This infection is caused by a staphylococcus aureus bacteria. People usually catch this infection when in hospitals. It is resistant to many antibiotics and it can be fatal.

How it Relates: The infection originally could not fight off antibiotics and with time these bacteria evolved and the ones that could resist antibiotics lived. Those got passed down so the trait that resisted antibiotics became dominant. Now MRSA is resistant to many antibiotics.

  6. 1. Piece of Evidence: Biochemical

    2. Definition: Study of the Chemical Process of Living Organisms

    3. Examples: Chimps and humans have 96% similar DNA, but 40 million differences. diferences are probably due to the DNA changing and becoming more complex as time goes on. similar organs like the apendix. the apendix was used by our ansestors for digesting food, like raw meat, and is now useless to modern humans because we no longer eat raw meat.

this picture shows the many kinds of a progenote. they all started from one organism and evolved. all are related by look and DNA

    4. How it relates: animals have similar bone structures to point out a common ancestor for modern animals. midifications are adaptations needed for common organisms. all animals branched out from one species a long time ago.

  7. 1. Piece of Evidence:
    Fossil Records
    2. Definition:
Evidence of life/evolution stored in a rock or fossil.
    3. Examples: (PS if there is a link that really had a good picture copy and paste the link in here!)

    - This shows 4 pictures of a species in different layers of sedimentary rock, and how it changed over time
    4. How it relates:
It shows the changes of a species, over time,in sequences of sedementary rock layers.

  8. 1. Piece of Evidence:

    2. Definition: When an organism mimics the look of another organism for defense in its habitat

    3. Examples: A caterpillar looks like a snake when a predator tries to attack it (PS if there is a link that really had a good picture copy and paste the link in here!)
    http://oncampus.richmond.edu/academics/education/projects/webunits/adaptations/moth.html

    4. How it relates: An organism changes becasuse it is in danger. This relates to evolution because the organism that changes survives along with the organism that it changes into. For example, the beetle has survived because it can mimic a bee, and predators dont want to eat bees.

  9. 1. Piece of Evidence: body structure

    2. Definition:extreme diffrence in use of body parts.

    3. Examples: (PS if there is a link that really had a good picture copy and paste the link in here!) Human bone structure is similar to other animals

    4. How it relates: It shows how the structure of bones has changed over time but came from common ancestors.

  10. 1. Piece of Evidence: Geographis Distribution

    2. Definition: traits found in creatures only in that specific area

    3. Examples: kangaroos in Australia,
different beaks on finches in the Galapagos Islands

    4. How it relates: Some animals exist in only certain areas and they adapt to that environment through evolution.

    1. Piece of Evidence: Vestigial Structures

    2. Definition:Organs or structures remaining in an animal that is not needed for its survival.

    3. Examples: tailbones in humans, salamanders are all blind but they still have eyes, and some snakes have small belvic bones.

    4. How it relates: It shows that at one point, the animal might have needed it but as it evolved it doesn't depend on it for survival.
